Uncertain Times

by admin - 22:52 on 13 June 2011

It's less than two months until the Black Isle Show, the event at which we hope to sell huge numbers of The Bumper Book of Black Isle Snappery, but our presence there is still uncertain.

After much failed contact with its organisers we recently managed to make a provisional booking, only to cancel it a few days later when we learned that all we'd get for our money is a small patch of grass. Exhibitors have to provide their own canvas premises and furnishings.

Plan B has now been activated, which involved asking the manager of farming equipment and garden specialists Frank Nicol if we can sub-let a corner of their massive marquee. The answer was “Yes” in principle but Big Frank will have to approve any deal. We'll find out on Friday.

More uncertainty descended on The Rural Retreat when the shock news broke that all our neighbours are to move out. The big house, which has been only occasionally occupied in the last few months, will shortly be put on sale along with the associated steading that's rented by the Montague clan.

Bess will be delighted, for this means Romeo will no longer be around to harass her. Matchgirl is less happy, fearing the arrival of new neighbours with rowdy kids and out-of-control dogs. We'd buy both house and steading ourselves to turn into a base for self-catering wildlife holidays, but unless the lottery numbers come up the masterplan will remain nothing but a dream.

Another dim and dismal rain-soaked summer day (what drought?) meant there was no chance of snappery when Master Marten called tonight. He seems to be taking turns with Lumpy. So after taking a few token snaps I left the Pentax alone and, with Matchgirl, just enjoyed watching our visitor.
