Pesky Martens

by admin - 20:06 on 27 June 2011

Master Marten is determined not to be taken for granted.

He turned up late last night, quickly hoovered up the blobs of Nutella on the gate then ran off, ignoring his real supper that was hidden behind a photogenic clump of plant life. The Nutella Tree was of no interest either. All the goodies were gone this morning, though.

Tonight he arrived at 6.45pm, before his meal had been put out, which was rather frustrating because that meant there was no reason for him to hang around. He disappeared into the undergrowth, halting only to look back through the leaves in a pose that would have earned me a fortune in postcard sales if I'd been able to capture it.

Speedy was out yesterday, zooming around the back of the garden beyond the range of the Pentax, while the woodpeckers have been noticeably active too. There must be something in the air.

Also full of energy are the young tree sparrows who chase their parents around the lawn, begging for food. They often get it, despite having fledged at least three weeks ago. They can't have read the RSPB book which states that parents stop feeding them after 10-14 days.

Award Update: Thanks go to Dee, keeper of The Coffee Lover's Blog, who has given me a Stylish Blogger award. I'm supposed to pass it on but I'm too much of a rebel. Fortunately she's been generous with her nominations so the chain won't break and cause me to suffer a hundred years of bad luck.

Book Update: Two more outlets have been added to the growing list of places where The Bumper Book of Black Isle Snappery can be purchased: the very up-market Kinkell House Hotel in Easter Kinkell and the Ullapool Bookshop. More are in the pipeline. Watch this space.
