Pesky Martens – Part 2
by admin - 21:15 on 01 July 2011
Pine martens know. Despite the fact that I put out his free food every night, Master Marten is determined not to be seen by me.
And just to rub it in, last night he came to visit at 9pm – a perfect time, except I was out at one of the increasingly rare band rehearsals. That can't be coincidence. Matchgirl had a good view, though.
Someone I did see today was Speedy, after his presence was brought to my attention by a visiting James. Our hedgehog friend ambled purposefully across the bottom of the garden until I pointed the Pentax at him, when he turned around and disappeared into the undergrowth. The one snap I managed was the best pose so far but too blurry to keep.
Bess, who'd watched his sharp exit, sniffed at the place where he'd entered the greenery but didn't follow. Speedy remained invisible although his progress could be marked by the waving tops of grass and weeds. Next time I'll follow him to his lair.
So the only snap today is of something I can guarantee not to run away – some of the wildflowers that grow at one corner of The Rural Retreat. A feast of colour.
