The First-footer

The first day of 2012 followed the pattern of the last ones in 2011 – a quiet day in and around The Rural Retreat. I did fancy a walk but on two occasions Bess and I were driven back indoors by rain and chill winds; wisely, Matchgirl made no attempt to leave the comfort of her armchair.

A visitor is yet to cross our threshold, with or without coal and bread, but the garden was first-footed shortly after six this morning when Mrs Marten dropped by to see what had been left in The Nutella Tree.

Something must have caught her attention when she arrived, as the first two Bushnell snaps illustrate, but it wasn't long before she tucked into her breakfast.

So 2012's first snap (albeit a grainy trophy cam one) featured a marten doing her photogenic meerkat impression – surely a good omen for a year of successful snappery. Time will tell.
