Marathon Matchgirl's Chilly Ambition
by admin - 23:11 on 18 February 2012
A PowerPoint/AV presentation and talk in an unheated village hall seems an attraction unlikely to draw the crowds on a rain-soaked night, but you never can tell.
Resolis Hall was packed when retired glaciologist Julian Paren, who now lives near Munlochy, described the Antarctic, the work he did there, and what it has to offer (inevitably well-heeled) tourists.
Taking Matchgirl was a mistake because she's now even more determined to visit the frosty wastes at the first opportunity. A place in the next Antarctic Marathon (really) costs only £9,000. She's pencilled in the date next year. What's wrong with the Bermuda Marathon, I'd like to know?
Bess agrees. As forecast, the snow returned today, much to our fastidious moggy's disgust. On several occasions she clamoured to be let out of The Rural Retreat but ventured no further than the doorstep after seeing a fine dusting of white on the lawn. It should be gone by tomorrow.
I braved the weather to attend the latest community market, this time in Culbokie, where I made almost enough profit to pay for the two ink cartridges I ordered later in the day. Making a living as a photographer is still a long way off.
